Brittany still pregnant: Feb. 20th
On the baby's due date I went to my clinical and carried on like a good little student, but my mind was not there. I did my paperwork and counted down until I could go home. I was having back pain but no contractions that day. My class mates looked at me like I was going to spontaneous erupt before their eyes! I kept it together...well I should say Ellie did.
On Friday the 21st, I woke up with contractions convinced it was the day! John went to work and I warned him to stay near the phone (like we are ever away from them now anyway). The house work for the weekend was completed at a record speed because if you know me then you know the house better be clean! No matter who or what is coming! Well, by noon contractions no more. I was disappointed. But not for long. That night they came back at 10 minutes apart. I tried to sleep, but I was grimacing in my sleep. After 3 hours I was up at 4am walking, moaning and timing contractions.
I woke John up around 6:30 and told him to start packing...they were 2 1/2 to 3 minutes apart and I was starting to get just a pinch nervous about the hospital. I mean I'm comfortable in them now...as a nurse wannabe-not as the patient. There was a fear too of the...come back when you're really in labor.
My 9 am we were on the way. When we got there, they said I said I "sounded like as I was in labor". I think my voice was quieter and deeper....concentrating reeeeaaal hard to not say choice words with polite company around as I was contracting. After triage and admission, it's true...she is in labor, I was 4 cm, almost 5, and asking about that thing...oh yes! Epidural, save my sanity. It was placed around 11 and running I'd say within 25 minutes of asking about it. It all happened so fast. Then began a long waiting game as I stayed at 4/5 cm for the next 9 hours or so.
Next thing...parents arrive, my water breaks, 3 more hours pass...AND 10 cm and let's push! Found out then Ellie was sunny side up and so work a little harder to get her out. OK, sure, fine...whatever I need to do because I'm DYING of thirst! (No baby....no drink). Ellie is born at 2:55 am after an hour and half of work. It was such a relief to see her because there were moments during the labor that had me on edge about her and her safety. Not sharing all the details- just trust me.
The whole experience of her birth was wonderful. (The nurses, our doctor and the hospital were phenomenal! Loved them all! Their expertise and manners were exceptional!) We can say that now because before the babies come, you never ever know exactly what to expect. You pray, cry and hope that all goes well for everyone involved. Our prayers were answered and little Ellie, John and myself were made a family without complication. God is good.
